Thematic Networks® and the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU) collect materials for municipal waste advice for the European Waste Prevention Week 2021

Share action ideas around waste prevention and reuse with others in the municipal sector and support our collection campaign for this year’s European Waste Prevention Week.

On November 20, the European Week of Waste Prevention (EWAV) kicked off with this year’s motto ‘Together for less waste – our community for more sustainability!’ This year, the focus is on committed communities that want to create greater awareness for sustainable consumption and waste prevention with their own projects.

Joint collection campaign for European Waste Prevention Week 2021

For this year’s Waste Prevention Week, the thematic network group ‘Environmental Communication and Waste Advice’ is collecting materials for public relations work on the topics of waste prevention and reuse, which will be published on the VKU platform for waste advisors after the campaign period. These can then be used free of charge by people working in environmental communication and waste advisors. Some materials on EWAV topics and on other waste fractions can already be found there. Together, we can now expand the platform by filling it with content. For this reason, we cordially invite you to upload images, graphics, references to regional campaigns and events or texts with ‘best practice’ examples and photos that you would like to share with colleagues in the thematic network group ‘Environmental Communication and Waste Advice’.

Get inspired by other ideas for EWAV 2021 and ‘Let’s Clean up Europe’!

How can engaged communities that want to promote sustainable consumption and waste reduction in society be supported by municipal companies? For example, with a digital sustainability guide! Waste Management Cologne (AWB) is creating one this year for European Waste Prevention Week to permanently showcase ‘best practice’ examples from municipal and local neighborhoods and communities. In the districts of Gütersloh and Warendorf, reuse days will be held at recycling centers for EWAV 2021, whereby items in good condition will be saved from disposal and given a new life in second-hand stores. The waste management companies organize the campaign together with non-profit initiatives. Another example is provided by the NRW Consumer Center, which is launching a major campaign to avoid unwanted advertising to mark this year’s Waste Avoidance Week.

On Theme Networks®, a professional exchange on actions around waste prevention and reuse and the ‘Let’s Clean up Europe’ campaign is currently taking place in different theme network groups. The actions mentioned above can also be found there to read (and imitate). The moderators of the thematic network groups ‘Environmental Communication and Waste Advice’, ‘Recycling Yards’, ‘Digitalization’ and ‘Urban Cleanliness and Winter Service’ have opened discussion rounds on EWAV 2021. When looking for new action ideas on waste prevention and reuse, and also with regard to the practical implementation of your own campaign on these topics, an exchange at Themennetzwerke® with other members can be useful. The discussions are still freely available to read after European Waste Prevention Week.
